Austrian-born artist Alfred Krenz (1899-1980) left a lasting mark on the South African art scene. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he went on to be influenced by Cubism under French painter Amédée Ozenfant. Krenz eventually settled in Cape Town in 1949, where he opened an art school and actively participated in exhibitions both locally and internationally, including the prestigious Venice Biennale (1954) and São Paulo Biennale (1961). His vibrant paintings are celebrated for their unique blend of European influences and South African landscapes.
