Carl Buchner (1921-2003)
Born in Somerset East in the Eastern Cape, Buchner obtained his fine arts degree from the Witwatersrand Technical College, and later his National Teaching Diploma. He taught at numerous schools in Gauteng as well as the Pretoria art Centre with Walter Battiss. Buchner persued a career as full time artist after retiring from teaching in 1977. Prolific in most genres, his fascination with the pierrot, harlequin and clown are his most sort after of subjects. In 1968 he received the Artists of Fame and Promise award which helped elevate his career. It is his subtle and sensitively executed portraits which find themselves in collections throughout the world.
