Dirk Meerkotter (1922-2017) was a renowned South African artist who explored various styles and media throughout his long and prolific career. He was born in Pietersburg (now Polokwane) and moved to Johannesburg with his family when he was five years old. He studied pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist for many years, but he never stopped pursuing his passion for art. He was influenced by modern and contemporary art movements such as cubism, expressionism, surrealism and abstract expressionism, and he experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and stained glass.
