Douglas Portway

Douglas Portway (1922-1993)
Born in Johannesburg, Portway studied fine art at the Witwatersrand Technical College and later went on to lecture at the University of Johannesburg. After his first solo exhibition in 1945, he was the first South African to be awarded a travel grant from the institute of international education. In 1957 he left South Africa for good, eventually settling at first in Ibiza and then Cornwall, Uk. He subsequently became part of the British abstract movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He never returned to South Africa. He is well known for his large abstract canvasses as well as his humorous erotic woks. His interest in Zen Buddhism is most apparent in his later works.
