Enslin Du Plessis (1894-1978)
The son of a DRC minister, Enslin became a journalist by profession, but his love was for painting, which he began at an early age. WW1, he served in the armed forces, and in 1918 returned to South Africa taking up a position at the Star newspaper in Johannesburg. In 1922 he returned to the UK and joined the international department of the Cape Argus. It was here that he began to take his painting more seriously and became a member of the London Group. He travelled intermittently back to South Africa, where he joined the New Group. In 1956 DuPlessis retired from the Argus and became a full time artist. In 1972 he was awarded the South African Akadamie Medal of Honour for painting.
