Frans Martin Claerhout [father] (1919-2006)

Born in Belgium, Claerhout studied to become a priest. In 1946 he moved to South Africa and went into the Catholic Church as a missionary in the Free State where he worked predominantly within the black communities. Sance art studies, his influence from home was evident in his technique, depicting everyday life around him, with Flemish flair. He later moved into sculpture as well, but was predominantly a painter with a parchant for pastel work. He went on to be a wonderful teacher to many, passing on his stylistic ouvre to those who were interested.
